Miso Mackerel with Passion Fruit Spinach Salad
Unctuous mackerel stands up well to strong flavors, such as this sweet, earthy, and umami marinade featuring miso. A bright, acidic, fruity spinach salad cuts through the richness for balance.

Ingredients
Mackerel
- 1 tablespoon white miso paste
- 1 tablespoon coconut aminos or 1 tablespoon coconut aminos
- 1 teaspoon monk fruit powdered, omit if using coconut aminos
- 12 ounces mackerel filets 2 large skin-on fillets
Salad
- 2 cups baby spinach picked through and tough stems removed
- 1 cup Napa cabbage sliced thin
- 1/4 watermelon radish sliced thin, optional
- 1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons passion fruit puree or 1-2 fruits, juiced and seeds strained out (just cut the fruit in half and use a spoon to move the juice/pulp/seeds into a fine mesh strainer – press with the spoon to release the juice into a small container)
- 2 teaspoons monk fruit powdered, or several drops liquid stevia glycerite, plus more to taste
- 1 teaspoon lime juice or rice vinegar, to taste
- generous pinch of salt to taste
Instructions
- Prepare a rimmed baking sheet with foil, rub with a bit of avocado oil to prevent sticking and then lay the mackerel filets, skin side down on the baking sheet.
- Combine the miso and coconut aminos and stir until smooth. Spread over each fish filet and set aside at room temperature for 5 minutes. Preheat the oven’s broiler while the fish marinates. When hot, add the fish and broil for 5-10 minutes, or until the fish flakes when tested with a fork.
- While the fish cooks, add all the salad ingredients to a large bowl. Toss to combine and then divide the dressed salad between two serving plates. Serve the fish along with the salad.
